TIPS

Good thoughts that bring good attitudes:

  • If you lack the confidence to start a drawing or composition because you don't know where you are going to end up, if you feel your hand skills don't support the quality of projects you want, if you want the drawing to be free of mistakes and perfect, if you don't take criticism well and find yourself comparing your works to others…then you are a perfect candidate for this workshop. We help and guide you through your toughest challenges and get you started in the right frame of mind.

  • Mistakes you make now are the best thing that can happen to you for future knowledge. "You'll know what not to do." The more mistakes you make while developing your skills now, the better you become and your confidence level will increase each time you start to develop a composition.

  • Who cares if someone says you can't draw, everybody can draw, sketch or design! Don't allow yourself to become discontented with what others say. No matter the outcome, the more you do something and the more you practice, the better you become. Create what you feel and feel what you create…but don't forget your client's goals and objectives.

  • Ignore perfection! Look for mistakes in your composition and be happy to find them. You will know what to look for the next time prior to implementation. Get better on your next work.

  • Prior to developing a composition, relax and organize your thoughts on a dry paper pallet and have fun. Draw for satisfaction and self-worth. Don't ever try to be perfect because perfection does not exist in the creative world, only innovation does.

  • Your goal is to have happy clients.

  • Think in lines, forms and space.

  • You must believe that you can always improve, and most importantly be humble.

  • Drawing, sketching, artwork and creativity are all different:

Sketching is a random flow of lines that are organized with quick thoughts; shapes, forms and line weight is usually at the same level. Sketching is a great tool to be able to communicate your two-dimensional thoughts to your clients. Do not over think! Think smooth and easy.

Drawing is a thought out process of lines, shapes and forms while incorporating textures and different line weights to depict objects more accurately.

Art is a refined resolution to a composition combining lines, forms, shapes, repetition, textures and a variety of line weights that depicts depth, resulting in a balanced piece of work for a very specific purpose.

Creativity is a process that is felt.

  • Think on your own two feet: look, see and do.

  • Everything you see is helpful even if it has no relation to the exact task at hand.

  • You do not need to be an artist to learn how to draw or sketch, just as you don't need to be a professional football player to play football.

  • Some people say think outside the box. I say, "Screw that! WHAT BOX!"

  • Never have a problem, always have a concern.

  • Do what others don't do.

  • Make friends with someone in every occupation.

  • There is no value in arrogance. However, there is big money value to humility.
  • Do not be a person who criticizes others — be a person who offers productive thoughts.

  • Make everyone feel important.

  • Don't worry about money; do it right, work hard, be diligent and the economics will follow.

  • Everybody makes mistakes. Own them. Solve them. Get better.

  • When you meet someone who is never late, never makes a mistake and knows everything, you have just met a jerk, probably trying cover up for lack of abilities. Stay away from valueless attitudes; they eat up your energy very fast. They will try and tear you down, so they look better.

  • Whether designing, drawing, sketching or developing a graphic composition, use a variety of line weights and textures.

  • The workshop is about exploring and sharing newly-acquired techniques and applications. As a coach of youth soccer, I have always found that the athletes learn more from each other than the coach. The coach is the introducer of strategy and technique. It's up to the athlete to practice and perform each task to accomplish a very specific goal — WIN! — and most importantly, never let your teammates down. The moral is practice, share, talk, dialog, help and work with your classmates with your newly-acquired techniques and application. You never know when the light will go off in your head or when you'll fully grasp each technique yourself. More than likely, while you're helping your classmate, you will be the one rewarded in the end.

    Three pet peeves:

  • Inaccurate perception of people: when people see you a certain way (never judge a book by its cover) and then put you in a predetermined category without any factual basis. These people usually stack others into categories to justify their lack of abilities and falsely feel better about their inadequacies.

  • Arrogant people and especially arrogant people with no abilities. Arrogant people who open their mouths way too much. They want to make people look and feel bad so they can look good and/or hide their lack of abilities.

  • People who "know everything" and have done nothing.

Learn new and innovative hand graphic and design techniques that will increase your speed and confidence. Your life and bank account will change forever…
